Yosemite and Yurt Living...

This past week was my daughter's spring break from school so the family packed up the car and headed east to Yosemite National Park. Instead of camping, we stayed in a Yurt, which is a cross between a cabin and a tent. Needless to say, we sure didn't rough it as we had a bed, bathroom with shower, kitchen, and satellite TV. However, it was in a beautiful area and we even had a hiking trail going from our yurt to a pretty creek.

Even though it was a little cold, it was a gorgeous week to take in the beautiful sights of Yosemite. My only complaint was the many cars and crowds, which was a little surprising. I thought that there would be less people at this time of year, but I was indeed wrong. My husband tells me it's even worse in the summer.

The next day, we stayed outside of Yosemite Valley and went on a 5.5 miles hike on the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Our destination point was the Wapama Falls, which was amazing, and our hike was a lot of fun. Along the way, we encountered other waterfalls, creeks, and lots of rocky terrain and bridges. We were worried that big "e" might not make it all the ways since it's kind of a long hike for a 5 year old, but she did great! Little "e" got to ride in a backpack carried by dad so he had a lot of fun too and even enjoyed a little snooze along the way. We truly had a great adventure and can't wait to go back!

Taking pictures and finding the right background...

One of the hardest things about owning an online business is taking your own photos. I don't have the huge budget to hire a professional photographer so I'm usually in the backyard tinkering with my trusted Olympus D-550 zoom digital camera. I've been trying to find the best background for my jewelry pieces - first I tried a white background, then it was onto colored cardstock, next was my wooden chair, and now back to white. It's hard figuring out which background will showcase your items the best. For now, I'm trying again with a white background but with a small splash of color by using some greenery. It's tough trying to get that perfect white color, but this is the best I could do for now. What do you all think?

It's the Great Big Pumpkin....

In celebration of All Hallows Eve, we took the kids to the Clayton Valley Pumpkin Farm this past weekend to pick out their pumpkins. Oh boy, did the kids have fun-especially big sister. Not only were there tons of pumpkins to choose from, but there was also a train ride, a petting zoo, and a haystack maze. The haystack maze was such big hit with both kids that we literally had to pick them up and drag them out of the maze - after they've already gone through it over 15 times. It was great fun and soon we'll be having fun carving our pumpkins!

In other news, my treasury with musical instruments just hit the front page today!! I am so surprised since it wasn't even on the first 2 pages! Needless to say, I'm super excited about it! :)

I just can't seem to get away from....

the color Green! Yes, I'm addicted and I bet you can probably already tell that from the color scheme of my blog. I know I should try to make more jewelry with other colors, as I'm sure not everybody likes green, but I always gravitate towards that color when hunting for new beads to play with. I think it's the perfect color for all seasons and has such a great range of tones - sage, celadon, olive, forest, mint.....
Since I can't seem to get away from it, here's some earrings in my favorite color:

Handforged and oxidized sterling
silver hoops with prehnite briolette drops.

Olive green vesuvianite briolettes
on elongated sterling kidney ear wires

Handmade Ear Wires

I'm back with my handmade ear wires in sterling silver. I had so much fun making them, and I'm rather happy with the end results. I made 2 pairs, one regular and one with a flat hammered look and oxidized both for a rustic look. What do you all think? :)

A huge thank you to...

A Punkin Card Company for featuring me in her fun blog! I woke up this morning to an email from the owner letting me that I was featured in her blog. Wow, what a great way to wake up and it certainly put a big smile on my face! :) Please do check out her store for beautiful cards and gift tags perfect for the upcoming holiday season. My favorite from her store is the "Joy" card - I love the green and brown colors!

On another note, I'm so excited when I got my tools on Friday! Woohoo! I've been wanting to make my own findings - headpins, ear wires, clasps, etc. - for a while now so I decided to invest in some hammers, a mandrel, a torch, a steel bench block, and others. I've been practicing with some copper wire so I think I'm ready to do some with sterling. I'll be back soon with pics of my attempts and hopefully they'll turn out ok! :)

On another note, I was so happy to find that my "Hip To Be Square" necklace was featured in Cuteable's cuteable finds for August 29th. Thanks so much to Sion Lee who runs Cuteable - "a Mon-Fri treasure trove of cute stuff for you and your home!" Be sure to check it out for cute and wonderful items from indie designers!

Catching Up With....

It's been a while since I've posted as it's been so crazy with big "e" starting kindergarten this week. She's been so super excited about going to the "big kids' school" and that she's no longer a "preschooler". As a special treat, dad took this Monday off and we all decided to head over to the Oakland Zoo to see the animals. Both kids had so much fun seeing the animals (well..when they did come out of hiding as most were asleep unfortunately), and big sister really enjoyed riding on the kiddie rides-especially the roller coaster.

I must say that having two kids is a lot of work, but it's so nice to see them playing together now that little "e" is older and walking. He loves to chase after his big sister and follows her around constantly. Big sister loves all the attention as well....except when he's getting into HER things. For now it's great to see them playing, but I'm not looking forward to the many fights coming! :)
